The Early Days
Middleton on the Wolds has a rich history of land ownership that dates back to before the Norman Conquest. Here are some key points:
Modern Ownership: The layout of farms and buildings was established during the enclosure of land between 1803-1805, and the Rector became a substantial landowner.
Early Landowners: Before the Norman Conquest, there were four landowners. By 1087, this number had reduced to two.
Notable Historical Owners: Over the years, notable landowners included Archbishop Ealdaed, Robert de Mortain, the Earls of Burlington, the Dukes of Devonshire, George Hudson (briefly), and Lord Londesborough.
Agricultural Changes: The agricultural depression in the late 1800s led to the sale of many farms.
