Sport History
Middleton’s sports history includes early violent football traditions like “tut-ball,” evolving into organised football by the early 1900s. Cricket was played from at least 1856, with notable success by the late 1800s. Victorian reforms banned brutal sports like bear and bull baiting. By the 20th century, organised clubs for cricket, football, and tennis emerged, with a community playing field established in 1950 and a pavilion added in 1976. Attempts to start a bowls club and maintain the tennis courts have had mixed success over the years.
