THE HUNT
Tradition, Controversy, and Change
Over the years, fox hunting in Middleton on the Wolds had seen both support and controversy. Historically, it was a popular social event, bringing the community together and maintaining rural traditions. However, with the introduction of the Hunting Act 2004, which banned the hunting of wild mammals with dogs, the practice has faced significant legal and ethical challenges Fox hunting has a long and storied history in Middleton on the Wolds.
The village has been a traditional site for fox hunts, with events often drawing participants and spectators from the surrounding areas. The image below shows a typical scene from these hunts, with riders on horseback and hounds ready for the chase.

The archival photographs above capture a vibrant winter meet of the historic Holderness Hunt, gathering directly in the centre of Middleton on the Wolds village. Captured in the pouring rain by local photographer Gerrie Buckley in 1988, these images document the local tradition at its peak. They display the full spectacle of the hunt featuring red-coated riders, horses, and the hound pack assembly against the backdrop of traditional village properties, long before the implementation of modern legislative changes.
