Rev. John Blanchard
Rev. John Blanchard served as the rector of St. Andrew’s Church in Middleton on the Wolds during the early 19th century. He was appointed as rector in 1808 and held the position until his death in 1827.
Rev. Blanchard was instrumental in the development of the rectory and its surrounding parkland. Around 1810, he erected a rectory house on newly allotted land to the south of the village and laid out gardens and parkland, creating a rather grand rectory designed by the architect Peter Atkinson, junior, of York.
The rectory, which later became known as Middleton Hall, was a significant part of the village’s landscape. Rev. Blanchard’s contributions to the church and the community were notable, and his legacy continued through his son, also named John Blanchard, who succeeded him as rector from 1827 to 1862. Rev. Blanchard’s tenure at St. Andrew’s Church is remembered for his dedication to both the spiritual and physical development of the parish, leaving a lasting impact on Middleton on the Wolds.
